July 25, 2009
Large crowds gather outside the gates that opened at 5.30AM letting in nearly 700 people to the free Remote Area Medical (RAM) health clinic at the Wise County Fairgrounds. This who arrive late may not be able to enter due to heavy crowds. An additional 600 people entered that day. The free clinic, which lasts 2-1/2 days, is the largest of its kind in the nation, providing medical, dental and vision services from more than 1,700 medical volunteer that treated some 4,000 patients. For many residents of this Appalachian area the RAM clinic serves as the only medical care they may receive each year.
